The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of several weeks, the US president started showing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions than the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently research projected his petroleum strategies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the president try to upend the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding about him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is emphatically not the account of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your outer garment you should give him your sweater too.
The apparent and direct reality that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of profound affection centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in numbers during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
