The Premier Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Spot.

Initially, this work could seem more like a difficult university quiz rather than the latest popular music record by a musician whose last hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Divided into 4 separate sections and sung in thirteen languages, it is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work that delves into feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently through the prism of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched upwards on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of contributors. The pure ambition by itself makes the work of contemporary artists look rather small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in transcend dry academic posturing is nearly miraculous, with sole credit belonging to Rosalía. While this is not her first project to fuse the past with the present, the scale are much higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that really raises her fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist at her height, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing your heart in two, you still desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This playful spirit comes forth brightly on the stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo crashes in like comedic force. The song immediately segues to the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album is that the listener never quite understand—or even wish to predict—where you is going next."

Nearly each track ends in a completely different point from how it began. One moment examines the transient nature of celebrity over a delicate symphony before collapsing into digital chaos. Another, a song that recalls her earlier rhythmic style begins out dark and sinister, with menacing beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Experiment & Accessibility

A key balancing act on Lux involves straddling the gap between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that it has become the artist's highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks as it spins skyward. This feat gets repeated by a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing have a sharp smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album is popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent excess. It is an abundant well of buried gems that requires time to fully mine but never feels like a chore. Where other major pop albums of the year seemed like a meager scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
