Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
